Although
born in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Robert A. “Tony”
Cothren grew up in Birmingham, Alabama with his family. After
five years at the Alabama School for the Blind, he became
one of the first students to be mainstreamed into public schools.
Tony graduated from Phillips High School, then, attended the
University of Alabama where he graduated with a B.A. degree
in history and English/political science. In his senior year,
Tony was ordained to the gospel ministry at Gilgal Baptist
Church in Duncanville, Alabama.
Following his university graduation, Tony attended Dallas
Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas, where he earned his
Master of Theology degree. Following his service on the staff
of University Baptist Church in Wichita, Kansas, Tony moved
back to Birmingham. He became a professor of Bible at Southeastern
Bible College and continued his pursuit in higher education.
During
his doctoral studies in guidance and counseling at the University
of Alabama at Birmingham, Tony worked as a counselor for Christian
Counseling Services of Alabama (marriage and family counseling)
and the Occupational Rehabilitation Center (as counselor for
the visually impaired and other disabled persons).
Tony obtained his Doctorate in Juris Prudence from Cumberland
School of Law of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
Following his passing the Alabama State Bar, Tony established
a private practice.
During this same time, Tony served both Presidents Reagan
and Bush as a Presidentially-appointed Public Board member
on the board of a federal agency (now known as the Access
Board). While on the Board, Tony was instrumental in the passage
and implementation of the Americans With Disabilities Act
of 1990. Following his service on the Board, Tony returned
to his law practice and did professional consulting work concerning
the implementation of the ADA.
Tony was appointed by the governor of Alabama to become a
Circuit Judge for the Tenth Judicial Circuit of Alabama. Since
his term on the bench, Tony has obtained certifications in
the field of mediation/arbitration until becoming the founder
and president of John 9 Ministries International, Inc., a
501c(3) tax-exempt organization serving both the church and
the disability community.
Tony and his wife, Cathy, live in Hoover, Alabama, and are
members of Shades Mountain Baptist Church in Vestavia Hills,
Alabama.
